SUPER MOSQUITOES!
A recent article in THE SUN has some stunning news about some small insects. According to THE SUN article:
"GENETICALLY modified mosquitoes that were designed by scientists to help populations decrease are actually thriving.
This is according to new research that claims the plan to create gene-hacked mosquitoes that have offspring which die immediately has spectacularly backfired and now scientists don't know what will happen next."Whoops! Wouldn't you know it, those silly scientists in their top secret labs 'accidentally' created a 'super skeeter' that just might kill millions by spreading malaria, yellow fever, and who knows what else. As if the normal mosquitoes weren't bad enough these boys had to bless us with a jacked up variety.
The mosquitoes have been conveniently released in South America as THE SUN reports.
The modified mosquitoes were released in Jacobina in Brazil and were supposed to mix with the local population and decrease numbers with their weak offspring genetics. Although the wild population did plummet for a short while, 18 months later it was right back up again.
Who's playing GOD you might ask, well THE SUN informs us that:
Oxitec, the British bio tech company running the project, assured members of the public that this negative result would not happen.
It then released 450,000 genetically mutated mosquitoes into the wild where interbreeding caused the spread of the mutated genes because the offspring failed to die.
One has to wonder what the government of Brazil was thinking when they allowed a private company to release Frankenstein mosquitoes into the wild. This debacle has all the markings of an environmental disaster in the making! No worries though as we can be sure they will have vaccine for whatever the new mosquitoes are bringing our way.
